Melissa K. McCormick Ph.D.
 Dr. Dennis Whigham
North American Orchid Conservation Center: A focus for orchid conservation and restoration
Dr. Melissa K, McCormack is an ecologist at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, Maryland. She is part of a group within the Smithsonian and the U.S. Botanic Garden that is working to develop the North American Orchid Conservation Center (NAOCC) to serve as a focus for overcoming the difficulties in orchid conservation.

Melissa’s current research focus is on mycorrhizal associations and how they affect the distribution of host plants. She has focused on understanding the effects of land use history and drought on orchid mycorrhizae and the effects of non-native earthworms on tree seedling mycorrhizae. She works in both upland forests and estuarine wetlands and employs a combination of field and molecular techniques.

In her Mid-America program, Melissa will provide information about research progress in understanding orchid-fungus interactions and about the status of efforts to implement NAOCC. Currently no single organization in North America focuses on the conservation and restoration of native orchids and no single entity is devoted to educating the public about the importance of orchids in an evolutionary and ecological context. Research, education and outreach will be key components of NAOCC. It will be based on continentally focused public-private collaborations that will contribute to conserving orchid biodiversity through collections of seeds, mycorrhizal fungi and living collections representative of regional genetic diversity. a.
